Your Taxes at Work: $100,000 for UM Scholars to Study Mediev

There by robbing 250 families of a $400 tax rebate. And adding to an already huge deficit. How many more families must suffer so the princes of academe, hidden from reality in their ivory towers, can keep their sand box full of new toys?

June 6, 2003Contact: Dave Lackey or Elizabeth Wenk/202-224-5344SNOWE & COLLINS ANNOUNCE $100,000 FOR U-MAINE SCHOLARS TO STUDY MEDIEVAL SCRIBAL HANDWRITINGWASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins today announced $100,000 in federal grant funding for the University of Maine, Orono to develop web-accessible computer software to study Medieval Scribal Handwriting. The funding comes through the National Endowment for the Humanities, which helps fund federal humanities, history and cultural projects throughout the United States."Studying the humanities enriches and empowers our students of today to become historians in their own right. Through projects like the Medieval Scribal Handwriting initiative at the University of Maine, our nation gleans knowledge into our nation's diverse heritage, traditions, and treasured history," Senators Snowe and Collins said in a joint statement. "The studies the University will conduct on the English language using this high-tech computer software will enable scholars to study important periods in our nation's history and pass their findings on to teach generations of students to come."Specifically, the $100,000 NEH grant will develop web-accessible computer software to assist scholars of medieval English and conduct a book-length study on English scribes from 1375 to 1525.###Elizabeth B.
