Wal-Mart to Offer Discounted Generic Prescription Drugs $4

Thursday, September 21, 2006

NEW YORK "” Wal-Mart plans to begin selling nearly 300 generic prescription drugs for a sharply reduced price, offering a big lure for bargain-seeking customers and presenting a challenge to competing pharmacy chains.

The world's biggest retailer said Thursday that it will test its sales program, in which 291 generic drugs will be sold at $4 for a month's supply, in Florida. The drugs involved provide treatments for conditions ranging from allergies to high-blood pressure.

They are saying, don't be fooled, Wal Mart is still evil because they don't offer health care to all their employees.

And did you catch Soledad on CNN this morning?
She asked if this was bad news because R&D money would dry up if generic prices are forced down by Wal Mart.
Go figure.

I wonder if she will ask Tom Allen and his ilk if their plans to negotiate (bully) low government drug prices from the drug makers will hurt R&D...
Nah.

No, no no.

We shouldn't be using competition and the free market to get us affordable medicine. Those require no money and effort. They just work naturally.

Instead we should create new programs and bureaucracies, and spend millions of dollars on programs that don't work.

I caught wind of this on the radio this morning. My first thought was that people would see this as a great thing. Next segment was from some Union putz, crying about the terrible wages and bennies. Wal-Mart just can't win. They pay a fair wage for the job, they do have helth insurance for full time employee's ( I doubt if but a few pay for part timers ) and I'd bet they hire more disabled folks than any company out there. The liberal glass is always half empty.

A $4 copay for Generics? And no premium to pay to get it? THAT'S BETTER THAN DIRIGO!

Imagine that, a commercial venture providing more value to the public than the government? Imagine that.

Wal-Mart has done more to reduce poverty with low prices than any government program ever has.

Perhaps the State should out-source the Maine RX program to Wal-Mart?

Maybe Wal-Mart can also undercut Citgo for heating oil?

No, they're not offering healthcare to their employees -- they're offering healthcare to the entire freakin' USA!

They are offering health care to their employees for $4 a pop for Rx, only EVERYONE gets that price, so everyone wins. If Wal*Mart wants to, they can change the way healthcare is delivered in the US. Many special interests will be clamoring to try to stop them. Watch the other chain Rx retailers like Rite-Aid, CVS, etc. When walk-in triage clinics pop up for a $20 consult with a nurse practitioner or Physician's Assistant, watch the AMA who will claim that health care is being compromised by evil Wal*Mart. The only thing Wal*Mart is compromising is the status quo and many protected industries average salaries.

Should be interesting to watch.

$4 drug plan gets mixed reaction

By Lindsay Tice , Staff Writer
Wednesday, September 27, 2006

When Mechanic Falls Pharmacy owner Chuck Pirmozich learned that Wal-Mart would offer $4 generic drugs in a Florida pilot program, his reaction was swift.

"It's stupid."

Sure, low-cost Wal-Mart medications sound good, he said, but what about the service, expertise and experience that independent pharmacies provide? Is it right to get cheap when it comes to lifesaving drugs?

The digging in is beginning. All the special interests who don't want anyone or anything to cut into their "good thing" will be coming out of the woodwork. Like I said, Wal*Mart has the power to challenge the status quo BIG TIME. Consumers will win. Everyone will try to con us into thinking they are evil for doing it.

Wal-Mart Flexes Its Muscle Again

48% Say New Discount Drug Plan Will Influence Pharmaceutical Costs

October 1, 2006
Forty-eight percent (48%) believe that Wal-Mart has the power to reduce the cost of prescription drugs across the country. A Rasmussen Reports survey of 1,000 adults found that just 22% disagree while 30% are not sure.

The independent drug stores, the chain drug stores, national retailers with pharmacies in their stores, the government, pharmaceutical companies, health insurers, all of them are working behind the scenes to develop "messages" in one form or another desgined solely to convince us that Wal*Mart is bad for us. Wal*Mart is a tough target when they can deliver what these groups cannot - affordable prescription drugs that even the poor can afford.

The fun one to watch will be the liberals - they want government to take care of your needs and this is contrary to that. They are working hard to make sure you can't do it by yourself. This announcement by Wal*Mart will allow many who couldn't afford their prescriptions to now purchase them at a price very, very close to the copay you pay when on Medicaid - GASP - Medicaid and other social programs may have to compete with Wal*Mart! The liberals will not tolerate that. They won't go after Wal*Mart on the drug-cost front (that's a loser - they can't be against lower prices), so they will go after Wal*Mart as an evil corporation that treats their employees unfairly, makes too much money, destroys the little guy, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Wal-Mart to sell $4 generic drugs in 14 more states Thu Oct 19, 8:47 AM ET

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Thursday said it would begin selling $4 generic prescriptions in 14 additional states, including New York and Texas, speeding up the roll-out of a plan that has put pressure on rival retailers.

Not to rub it in, 8) but I would have hoped the Rep. leadership would be out congratulating WALMART for driving down the cost of health care using a competitive model. the INdian drug program and hopefully AARP's is becoming obsolete as a result. WAlmart's walk in clinics being pioneered around the U.S. have more than a few conventional health care providers nervious.

Maybe my memory is faulty but wasn't Maine one of the states that sued Walmart several years ago claiming their drug prices were too low?

Two of the three prescriptions I purchase at Shaws have cost me a little over $4 each for a long time. There are many drugs that have been on the market for years. They are affordable and effective. I believe that the high cost of medicaions has more to do with the marketing of the newer, more expensive, drugs. These highs costs can often be avoided by insisting that your physian prescribe to fit your budget, not the drug companys.

I suppose the screams from small pharmacies ect. is expected.

Consider this, how many years ago was it that one would go to
pharmacy pick up rx. and ask phamcist behind counter all questions?

With the advent of computers and laser printers we now get more information
about our drugs than ever before attached to rx when dispensed!

In the end people will still go to local phamacy, wholesalers will lower costs to compete
and the world will contiunue. Let's face it this is nothing new it is what happened
before CVS, Rite Aid etc. arrived!
