Tornado Warnings in Maine! HUH!

According to the National Weather Service:

...."AT 456 PM EDT... NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE DOPPLER RADAR INDICATED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM CAPABLE OF PRODUCING A TORNADO 9 MILES WEST OF SHIN POND... OR 15 MILES NORTHEAST OF BAXTER ST PARK... MOVING EAST AT 35 MPH".....

Also:

...."THE TORNADO WILL BE NEAR... SHIN POND BY 510 PM EDT"...

Well I am not the brightest light on the tree but if there is a "tornado" in Maine, near Shin Pond, and it is heading east, I don't see it a threat to Penobscot Cty.

I have not seen many tornados in Maine in 63 yrs. I don't think I will dig a tornado shelter just because these guys are crying wolf and scaring the pants out of everybody.

Wow. Red box inside yellow

Wow. Red box inside yellow box on the radar map. That's an intense system. North of Medway - probably around Sherman. And people wonder what causes all the blow-downs in the woods.

If they had said it was a

If they had said it was a threat in the Fryeburg, Bridgton, Naples, Paris, Norway, Oxford or any other area around these towns...you better believe we would listen. It seems like we have been hit by at least two or three tornados a year as well as several microbursts during the summer months as well.

Sherman may not be the

Sherman may not be the Penobscot County most people think of [ie, Bangor], but it is, indeed, in Penobscot County.

Ch. 5 in Bangor reporting

Ch. 5 in Bangor reporting it's in the Shin Pond area moving east toward Mt. Chase. Actually, Shin Pond is in Mt. Chase, but east of the settlement. . . . I meant to say it's west of the village.

Mike Pajak was at Shin Pond

Mike Pajak was at Shin Pond just as I read this thread. I called him to warn him to be careful, and he was marveling at the sky as I called.

He has posted some pictures of the Pond on his Facebook, for those of you who can get in to see them.

I was delivering a shipment

I was delivering a shipment of signs today, and as I visited a lonely farm house on the Benedicta Road headed out of Sherman, I took these photos... no one was home, the air got very cold very fast, and the wind picked up. I pulled a Dorothy and went into the bulkhead after the 4th photo...

"Maine averages one to two

"Maine averages one to two tornadoes per year, typically touching down in uninhabited wooded areas. A tornado touched down in Phippsburg on Thanksgiving Day 2005, causing damage to trees and coastal homes and camps. In 2009, tornadoes were verified in Aroostook and in Oxford County, Maine."

We have about 1 or 2 at least

We have about 1 or 2 at least in Western Maine each year. I think it was in Oxford that wiped out all those green houses and it took all summer and fall to rebuild them. I believe there were 22 in all that were destroyed. A couple of years ago we had one touch down in Bridgton by Highland Lake. Mostly what we see are microbursts. There was a house that was destroyed last year and a business that was damaged, but I can't remember if that was a microburst or not.

Back on the air.

Missed the main core which hit Turner. There was rotation clearly evident. Never saw a funnel cloud. Wind was moderate. No hail in Auburn but hail was reported in Turner. Tree down in Minot. Good gully washer.

Getting thunder and rain in Westbrook; on the radar, you can see a nice deep red thunderstorm. I'm retracting the horns on my helmet for safety's sake.

I had a strange occurrence here. It downpoured an (estimated) inch or more of rain, but the sky was clear overhead the whole time.

Yep, we sure do have

Yep, we sure do have tornadoes in Maine. Does anyone recall the twister that ripped through the east Farmington/Industry area a few years ago? I saw real damage on Federal Row in Industry - tow or three houses and forested areas ripped up. And now here's this from earlier this week in Maine - http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/145169.html

I spent much of the evening

I spent much of the evening from 4:30 until 7:00 pm at the National Weather Service in Gray manning WX1GYX taking incoming radio traffic from SKYWARN trained weather spotters who are amateur radio operators.

NOAA uses their real time reports to verify radar information. The worst line was from Bethel to Topsham with some concerns that there may have been a touch down in South Paris around 219 and 26. It will be interesting to see what is confirmed over the next few days. I will be taking a few more shifts at WX1GYX in the coming weeks.

As for tornadoes in Maine, NOAA confirmed one just the other day 6 miles north of Shin Pond in Central Penobscot County. Last year a tornado ripped through South Paris and destroyed a local greenhouse. Maine has about two or three confirmed each year, but I am sure there are many more that just plain go unnoticed because of the remote nature of Maine's north woods. That said the County has some terrible storms.

Special Thanks to Tom Berman N1KTA for letting me volunteer at NOAA. I truly enjoyed the experience and look forward to doing it again.

Funnel clouds were spotted in

Funnel clouds were spotted in Minot, Litchfield & South Paris. It's not clear at this point if any of the funnel clouds made it to the ground and became a tornado. The storm was most severe in Oxford County, where a funnel cloud ripped off the roof of one house.
People in Oxford said the storm hit and was gone in the span of four minutes.

There is a long line of severe thunderstorms headed for Cumberland County--it depends on where you are, I think.
