My child is young...If this vaccine proves to be safe...I have no problem giving it to her. I would like to reduce her chance for this type of cancer...even if it is low.
No vaccine is 100% safe. Hopefully the girl below will recover from her paralysis.
A 16-year-old Illinois girl was vaccinated [with Merck's HPV vaccine] July 7th and 13 days later developed symptoms eventually diagnosed as Guillian-Barre Syndrome
That never happens with commonly used vaccines, does it?
Naran...George trolls for all the information that will prove anything linked to something remotely sexual...will get you.
~Good article discussing the new HPV vaccine.
The thrust of the article is to point out that the targeted age group - middle-school aged girls - will, at 18 years of age, be beyond the point of effectiveness proven for this vaccine.
Cancer-virus vaccine targets wrong age group
...Infectious disease specialists and cancer pathologists say the incubation period for HPV becoming cancer is 10 to 15 years -- [which means the]...average cervical cancer patient, who is 47, contracted the virus in her 30s... would not be protected by Gardasil taken as a teen.
..."The number one problem with the vaccine ...has not been tested adequately on [targeted group - middle-school girls]," said Dr. Joseph DeSoto...

~Merck is said to be 'working on a booster shot', which would be another dose of Gardasil, to extend the five year protection saying that there is some evidence of "immune memory" with the vaccination. Will be interesting to see what the results of their research yields in this regard..
MERCK BANKROLLS US LOBBY FOR GARDASIL CANCER VACCINE
Merck is helping bankroll efforts to pass state laws requiring girls as young as 11 or 12 to receive the manufacturer's new vaccine against the sexually transmitted cervical-cancer virus, AP reports. Some conservatives and parents-rights groups say such a requirement would encourage premarital sex and interfere with the way they raise their children, and they say Merck's push for such laws is underhanded. But the company said its lobbying efforts have been above-board. With at least 18 states debating whether to require Merck's Gardasil vaccine for schoolgirls, Merck has funnelled money through Women in Government, an advocacy group made up of female state legislators around the country. A top official from Merck's vaccine division sits on Women in Government's business council, and many of the bills around the country have been introduced by members of Women in Government.

2006 saw the launch of Gardasil the first vaccine against HPV (human papilloma virus) to protect against cervical cancer. Another HPV vaccine, Cervarix, is due to be launched in 2007. These two vaccines are together predicted to generate sales of more than $4bn in 2012, which could see them becoming the top selling vaccines. Their success could lead a growth in the cancer vaccines market, resulting in it being worth 7 times what it is today. Will you be able to capture your share of the market place?
From Dalek's other thread:
Government Mandated HPV Vaccine may cause Infertility!
Merck has stopped promoting the mandatory use of Gardasil that targets the human papillomavirus (HPV). It's probably no coincidence that their turn-around comes at the same time that reports from the National Vaccine Information Center are surfacing about fainting and dizziness reported by dozens of patients as side effects of Gardasil. There are also some concerns that Gardasil may cause infertility.
Talk about stupid! Texas madates that this vaccine be given to all teenage girls before the drug is really even proven safe, and now they may be responsible for sterilizing thousands of girls! But of course, this is all just "conspiracy theory" nonsense.
Since this virus is only a problem for young women who are sleeping around, perhaps abstinence would be a better solution!
News articles and health studies say that men can get (and carry) the virus as well.
Yes, the major problem would be promiscuous men who unwittingly become carriers of HPV. The problem is still one of sexual promiscuity.
This vaccine was clearly not really ready for mass distribution, but Merck has lots of money, as well as lobbyists who promote it to greedy politicians. And it should never be mandated by government.

7 February 2009
Gosh, my teen daughter gets migraines now.
Maybe I can blame Merck?
Oh wait, she used to get headaches before she got the vaccines.
We just didn't call them migraines then.
CDC said findings from its Vaccine Safety Datalink program, which uses data from several managed-care organizations, found no increased risk of a pre-specified set of possible side effects -- -- among vaccine recipients compared to a similar group of patients who didn't receive the vaccine. The study looked at 375,000 doses of the vaccine from Aug. 20, 2006, to July 20, 2008, in girls and women ages 9 to 26.
If the National Vaccine Information Center could, they would put all vaccine makers out of business.
Nonetheless, keeping abreast of the latest statistics regarding any new drug or vaccine after it reaches "the market" is always a wise idea, IMO.
As a disclosure, I used to work for a company whose R & D section in which I worked, entered a joint venture with Merck. While well aware of the 'naysayers' out there, I'm also well aware of the process of bringing a drug or vaccine to the market - and the marketing behind the product.
The pharmaceutical industry - from what I've observed/experienced from the 'inside' & 'outside' - can be very influenced by 'politics'...
