National GOP to Target Michaud ~ Why not Snowe too?

Michaud is on the Veterans Affairs committee. Does anyone know what Maine record he had to get this assignment? I could get to like this dem'rat but at a forum preprimary with other candidates,he stated he thought clinton was the greatest President.

Democratic Rep. Mike Michaud won a wide-open race last year to succeed John Baldacci, another Democrat who became governor. But because Michaud beat Republican Kevin Raye with only 52 percent of the vote, he is still considered vulnerable. The National Republican Campaign Committee has fired off three news releases in the last two months criticizing Michaud's opposition to the tax cut and noting a campaign contribution from a "San Francisco liberal" Democratic House leader. Similar releases have gone out in other competitive districts...[url=http://www.pressherald.com/insight/jansen/030608bartcolumn.shtml]http://...

I'm interested to see how the Congressional seats look. That way we can be certain what prospects are eligable to run.

DO we know of any GOP candidates lining up to run?

If we want Republicans to fare well in the '04 election, the last thing we need is a RINO as our Second District candidate.

Doug...Where do you think the 2nd District "is", politically, these days?Michaud won in 2002 because he:1. wanted it more than Raye
2. had a superb organization
3. had heavy union support
4. was pro-life
5. was a FrancoThe Michaud state HQ was right around the corner from my office. I had to ask his office to tell his volunteers to quit parking in our parking lot. His volunteers came early in the campaign and in large numbers. Compare and contrast to the Raye team.It is my perception that the 2 CD has been battered in the months following the last election. I wonder if Michaud has been weakened by the job losses? He is doing a nice job of keeping his name in front of the voters in the L-A area. He had an op-ed in the LSJ today. He is in the TCT every week with an article. Susan and I were at a CMMC charity ball a month ago, he was there for a cameo.Message: He isn't going to be easy to defeat. The GOP candidate better be starting now and better be very strong in Androscoggin County. Mike knows this is where the race will be won.

I don't think he's done enough wrong to be vulnerable, especially now that he's an incumbent. It would take a real superstar to beat him, in my opinion.
I think resources could be better spent somewhere else.

If we have a Candidate in the Second District that stands for traditional Republican values he will give Republicans a reason to get out and vote. We would have won control of the Legislature if our voters had gone to the polls last election, they didn't. If Bush wants to carry Maine he needs to be finding a good candidate soon. If Republican Leaders in Augusta want a majority they better help him.

Lest anyone misunderstand, any candidate with whom I can agree on a majority of issues, [although I have a few I refuse to compromise on], will receive my support.
I've been in lots of fights that were impossible to win over the course of my life, but in my old age I'm trying to use my resources more responsibly. I had thought Allen was more vulnerable, but that might just be my personal distaste for his politics speaking.

Re: National GOP to Target Michaud ~ Why not Snowe too?

Given what Steve Joyce had to spend and the complete lack of state or national party support, he did excellent against Allen. The Nationals sent about $1Million to Raye, and nothing to Steve. Imagine what a quarter of a mil or so might have done for Steve. I believe Allen spent in the $400K range.Allen had plenty of voting record vulnerabilities, especially on defense and on social spending overall. But without the funds to widely disseminate the message, they couldn't be used to powerful effect.

George~ the Maine GOP's lackluster support of Steven Joyce speaks volumes. With that record it will be hard to recruit qualified candidates.

George:Now you have me curious. What issues could Steve have raised to enable a 'connection' to develop? How much did Steve raise and spend?

George:Thank you for your response. I didn't follow other campaigns last fall. You are right on your 'it is how the message is delivered' theme.Have you noticed that the Maine GOP is having a tough time coming up with alternatives to some of the stuff Baldacci is pushing? This is very bad form.
