Excessive spending by state gov't causes retardation of the economy. A retarded economy causes young people to leave the state. Therefore, Glen Cummings proposes to increase state gov't spending so young people will stay in Maine.Astoundingly daffy.

Cummings doesn't grasp the relationship between government spending and a strong private sector. It is an inverse relationship. The left has been whining about the lack of college degreed people in Maine for some time now. What they don't understand is that it takes JOBS requiring a college degree to attract and retain degreed people. As they continue to ratchet up spending, more an more college graduates are obliged to leave the state to find work. For example, a look into Lewiston's census age stratification is absolutely stunning. The young people have left town. Yet our public officials, legislators especially, are whistling past the graveyard with a bounce in their step.Cummings bill works against his desired result. I think it is scary that he is both a legislator and an educator.Oh well, people get the government they deserve.[ 01-09-2005: Message edited by: Bob Stone ]

Not just an educator, an Economics Professor! As the token pro-market person, I walk a narrow path between uncollegiality and incredulity.Mark, Daffy was the "alternative" duck, right? Goofy was a _____?[ 01-09-2005: Message edited by: billPhillips ]

Bill...I had to deal with a whole passel of them up at Orono. Mel Burke, John Coupe, Tom Duscheneau, some guy named Beeman who forgot to give us our final (we found him playing cards in the Bear's Den at 1:15...the final was supposed to begin at 1:00). They knew their stuff, you just had to process out and ignore the bullcrap. At least those guys stuck to teaching.Bob
