Clever Maine 'pubs should be able to make some hay on the dem votes here.
Oh did I say "clever Maine 'pubs"? Sorry, I wasn't thinking for a moment.
...and there's the truth behind the matter. Rs trying to exploit a detestable cultural practice for political gain. The next time an R gives a shit about a female Muslim immigrant or refugee in Maine will be the first.
So, because of that we should vote AGAINST prohibiting genital mutation.
Yup, got it.
I think your hate for Republicans exceeds any true desire you have to protect women, muslims, or gays for that matter. The thing speaks for itself.
Happily, for Republicans, you don't see it. And that insanity is why people hate Democrats.
Hey, dummy, where did I say that Ds were right to vote against it?
matt said, "Rs trying to exploit a detestable cultural practice for political gain."
What's the political gain? I want it to be a state crime for FGM to occur in Maine.
I want to protect girls from this butchery, and I want state prosecutors to be able to bring charges.
I think the moral case for child abuse laws and the womens' rights arguments that are such a big part of the D brand both apply here, in full measure.
Therefore I am puzzled that Ds are opposed to making FGM a criminal offense in Maine.
How is that an example of exploiting for political gain?
It's Rs capitalizing on anti-Muslim fervor by shining a spotlight on a relatively rare (in the US) practice that is ALREADY ILLEGAL. Funny how when it's politically expedient, Rs use the same tactics that they criticize when Ds try to pass supposedly redundant/unnecessary laws pertaining to gun control, hate crimes and the like.
Marijuana use is "already illegal" too, as a matter of federal law. Doesn't mean the US Attorney is going to charge anyone for using it.
Maine prosecutors would like to be able to bring charges in the rare but abhorrent cases when girls are abused in this way. Right now they cannot, since Maine has no state law against it.
Not a partisan issue, why can't all law makers say amen to this bill?
Because many of them have the connection between their spines and their brains 'mutilated' shortly after being elected to office.
