The voters of that district chose Sharon Treat over Doug? Oh, that's right, there are a lot of state bureaucrats residing in that district. Well, of course. :D

Dirigo Health will be worse than having no plan at all

As a small business owner struggling to maintain health insurance for my employees in the face of 20 percent annual increases, I regretfully came to the conclusion that Gov. John Baldacci's cure for Maine's health care crisis is the worse than the disease. The governor's plan relies on the state's ability to sell health insurance to people who do not currently have it. Fewer uninsured people would reduce the amount of charity care hospitals now provide. Since these costs are passed on to paying customers, reduced charity care would theoretically reduce hospital costs and eventually lower insurance premiums. Dirigo Health would provide coverage by enrolling more people in Medicaid and subsidizing rates for individuals and families up to three times the federal poverty level. -----Unfortunately things have moved fast in the Legislature. Despite serious concerns among many businesses, the Maine Chamber of Commerce is struggling to back off from its premature support of Dirigo Health. The hospitals, insurance companies and doctors have cut deals because they believed passage is inevitable. The special interests are protecting themselves at the expense of small business. Maine people can only hope cooler heads prevail and the momentum slows until the consequences are fully understood. Dirigo Health is a risky expansion of Medicaid, financed by a one-time windfall and long-term tax increases, that does little to address the rising cost of health care. It will weaken our private insurance market and increase the burden on individuals and businesses now paying for insurance in order to give more people free health care. Reform is crucial to Maine's working families, but passing a bad plan is worse than no plan at all. Wow, he does have the plan figured out. If only we could spread this view. Dirigo will be a disaster for a state teetering on the brink of economic devastation.
