She may charge you $120K,

She may charge you $120K, Mattybubbles, but most wouldn't pay more than $20.00, and, as Mike G points out, you can watch her doing...........well..... just about anything, for free.

Whatever happened to M.D.

Whatever happened to M.D. Harmon on AMG? He was a blast.

Thanks for the reminder, Mr. Carter. I overlooked him in my list of fondly remembered MIAs, but he certainly was a blast.

Thinking of M.D.Harmon (who,

Thinking of M.D.Harmon (who, in case you don't know, was the token conservative editorial writer for the Portland paper), in addition to many other broadly-informed MIAs, I wonder if the lower quality of discourse on AMG these isn't so much an onslaught of barbarian newbies but a wholesale resignation of the really smart people. (No offense intended to the smart people who are reading this!)

I trace that transition to the departure of Scott Fish. In addition to actively supervising the site, Scott was one of the really smart posters.

You need to remind everyone

You need to remind everyone that M.D. Harmon, a true prince of a man, died in a firearm accident in his house.

I agree on departed to an extent, but others have offered other things like the now owner (in name only or actual) I have never been as sure as Roger Ek
in past. Which seems odd as there has been more criticism of him than ever would have been allowed in past IMO.
Shouldn't the really smart posters have supported the higher quality being continued ?

I also believe essentially becoming All LePage All the Time did us not much good and drove some away.

If no one responds to his comments do you think he'll go away? What would be the point of commenting if no one replies?

I continue to follow threads

I continue to follow threads here and just as I am catching up with all the posts in a thread, thinking I might want to post a response I start to read the vulgarity and immaturity of some of the posters and realize there is no reason to respond; the thread has already degenerated. I am quickly becoming an MIA partially because the site does not have the same editorial control it had when I joined 14 years ago.

But wasn't one of the cardinal rule of AMG I just to ignore those things and pass on threads that one didn't have anything to add ?
Really that was a form of self editing wasn't it.
I have asked this question before.
How many have broached the subject with the owner as many did in past ?

When I joined profanity meant

When I joined profanity meant a warning, multiple offenses resulted in a ban. No trial, the editor was judge and jury and we all knew it. The same went for personal attacks and unmasking of those who wished to be anonymous for various reasons. I really do avoid posting because of the profanity and the personal attacks; not because I am thin skinned but because it lowers the intellectual level of the conversation.

I'll stick with my original

I'll stick with my original response to this thread, was facebook twitter and other social media around when AMG first launched around 1999, no

AMG had it's run and now you have so many forums, like the BDN forum ad nauseam, what turned me off from AMG? I'm still here it just seems less important and it is. What will be interesting is to watch Facebook, Twitter become less important as it will surely be and is happening now. Only old people are on Facebook.............

May I offer a suggestion?

May I offer a suggestion?
Encourage a discussion-minded friend to join AMG. The forum still has the potential for engaging in topics in a thoughtful manner complete with argument and evidence, and your participation doesn't depend on your having a Facebook or Google identity or a Twitter account. You can develop a topic more fully than in a Facebook post, and you won't bother your social media friends who just want to see cat pictures and recipes.

There are trolls everywhere. Unlike the AMG trolls, some are actually quite clever. Experience teaches us it's futile to engage with the AMG trolls. They aren't attempting to persuade and they aren't open to any actual discussion. Why trade insults with them? Why even read their comments? Just skip them, instead of contributing to the degradation of a thread by engaging them.

Good suggestion , mainemom.

Good suggestion , mainemom.

I find it interesting that time tested tact has not stopped their presence.

Trolls: Agree but it was OK when someone didn't think Woodcock would be Gov. or disagreed on LePage style issues .
Note: I am quite proud that hIs Honor Justice Billings ( at the through for a longtime ) called me a troll.

Most of these things are editorial issues I don't mind trolling it is the vulgarity . Alas the owner does not feel that way
apparently.
