York County Conservatives

TABOR NEEDS YOU!On November 2nd TaxpayerBillofRights.com will begin collecting signatures intended allow Mainers to vote on a SPENDING CAP on government, state, county, municipal and school. It's better to collect signatures at a warm polling place than to trudge through snow door to door. Please help us on election day! Can't give the whole day? How about the morning rush? the evening rush? You'll see your friends and give them a chance to support common sense spending limits. We can use people in every town in York County. If you can give even an hour to this worthy effort, please contact me, Fred Staples at 284-6332 or jstaples@maine.rr.comOr, just go to taxpayerbillofrights.com and sign up there![ 10-23-2004: Message edited by: Fred Staples ]

Thanks, Calvin!
It doesn't take an army (nor does it take a village ;) ) It only takes a few committed warriors to make a real difference!

Hi Charlie,Here's a link to the language of the referendum.
[url=http://www.taxpayerbillofrights.com/tabor_ref_lang.htm]http://www.taxpay...I'll be getting my copies of the petition this afternoon and I'll post the language here. Thanks for asking!

Re: York County Conservatives

The top of the petition says:An Act to Create a Taxpayer Bill of RightsThe question reads:Do you want to limit increases in state and local government spending to the rate of inflation plus population growth and to require voter approval for all tax and fee increases?[ 10-24-2004: Message edited by: Fred Staples ]

Whoopee! Another (statutory) referendum with no pre-screening and little advance discussion. We can discuss it after the petition has been validated and it's on the ballot. I really hope the next legislature (and the bald one) see the writing on the wall and pass a spending cap as a constitutional amendment; we shouldn't have to deal with Palseky II, III, IV........

Re: York County Conservatives

Dilli'The language was thoroughly researched. It's the best Taxpayer Bill of Rights in the country.
And, it's designed for Maine.Q-1 is a tax cap. Ours is a spending cap.
Big difference.

Dilli:Perhaps if the partisan Sec. of States office had not sat on this for two whole months it could have been gotten out and communicated to the people. This is something that the Maine Heritage Policy Center has been working on for sometime. It is better than the Colorado TABOR because it is tailored just to Maine. For you to throw stones at it indicates just which side you are on.

The authority of our government is in the constitution and it it, indeed, a republic. However, when our government doesn't listen it's the duty of the people to rise up.

George,
There are lots of other people doing the poll watching. We started late and we're bringing different people into the process. The legislature doesn't usually go against the will of the people as expressed in referenda.

It's all happening at the same time, George.I've helped a few different candidates. Biddeford stands a good chance of electing a couple of Republicans. It's called multi-tasking.

Re: York County Conservatives

So sue me.George, I have not seen this much general interest in Maine politics since Term Limits, and we can thank Palesky for that. It surely isn't a result of the usual Republican and Democrat drones running for office.Jefferson called for violent revolution every generation. Somehow I can't imagine you rousing your sad sack butt away from your computer to do that.Let's see, whose political opinions and experience shall I trust and value more, George or Jefferson...George or Jefferson... This is a tough one.Not.We can't even get these Republican candidate heroes of yours to stand up and endorse TABOR, to say nothing of the Tax Cap, so why in the world should I be working to watch the polls for their slack butts?(David Babin notably excepted)[ 10-25-2004: Message edited by: Mark T. Actaully, I was working for the TABOR proposal since last spring even before the republican party embraced the concept. Also in reading candidate bios in the papers, I see most of the republican candidates endorsing TABOR especially the Portland candidates.Steven Scharf

Re: York County Conservatives

You are an ass. A consummate ass.It doesn't "kill me" or even bother me that Republicans wrote TABOR and are doing good work on it. If it did, I wouldn't be involved and I wouldn't be lining up a tremendous number of volunteers to actually maake it happen.More than 10% of the members of the LP are actively assisting this effort, you supreme ass.Of the 28 volunteers attending Mary Adams workshop on Saturday, 6 were LP members. And all six raised their hands when Mary asked how many people were giving the *entire election day* to this signature gathering drive. I believe only one non-libertarian gave an equal committment.I hate your guts today George. (and today isn't starting out so good either).Because you are a fusty whining crank of an ass.We wrote the first TABOR in 1993 and fusty whining cranky asses like you didn't help us then.If you had, we all could have saved Maine taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars.Hey that's great Republicans are finally catching up to what Libertarians proposed 11 years ago. And I applaud them for endorsing TABOR. And I am working with them. And so are LP members. But I guess we're just a superior group of people.[ 10-26-2004: Message edited by: Mark T. Cenci ]

Reminds me of an old saying, Mark:I despise the guys who minimize
and criticize the enterprise of
other guys whose enterprise has
made them rise above the guys
who've criticized.[ 10-26-2004: Message edited by: Fred Staples ]

Re: York County Conservatives

Fred: I'm serious when I say I applaud the Republicans who are working on the Taxpayer Bill of Rights. Especially the candidates. And because David Babin was at the workshop, I singled him out as someone worthy of praise. I didn't mean to say he is the only one worthy of praise.Be wary of George's comment that many Republicans support "a spending cap". Is not the useless Maine Chamber of Commerce bit of nonsense a "spending cap"?Yes, it is. So let us be wary of this idle talk of support for "a spending cap". Demand support for the Taxpayer Bill of Rights!

Re: York County Conservatives

Oh that's rich.Yes George. On top of everything else, we Libertarians are ever so thankful that Republicans have given us something to do!How boring our world had become! The idle hours, the absence of anything to live for!

"Mainly" what I do George?Shall we compare total numbers of posts on AMG between you and I?It is *you* George, who "mainly" resides in front of your computer, taking as many potshots per minute as I do.Except my potshots are directed at elected people who make my life worse. If too often those people are Republicans, it ain't my fault.

Re: York County Conservatives

Yes George. Again, because you have a mental disorder, I applaud the Republicans who are working for an effective spending cap. You, however, because of your mental disorder, will have nothing positive to say about Libertarians who are working for an effective spending cap.Term Limits has not yet been altered. A resounding vote of support for the Taxpayer Bill of Rights could also live long enough to be written as a Constitutional Amendment.Let us see how many Republicans undermine that effort by supporting the Chambers plan, or no cap at all.Are you saying George than *none will do that*?Let's get your committment on that, in writing, before you denigrate me or the Maine LP again.

Re: York County Conservatives

Your post about referenda is a good one. The only thing I can say is that the TABOR was tried first in the representative process and it failed, partly because of the rules written by the dominant party in the legislature. One way to accomplish what you are hoping for is for Republican candidates to endorse, work for and implement this TABOR into their campaigns. Use it to educate the public, and define themselves against their opponents.I suggested we wait until 2006 to put TABOR on the ballot so that the Guber candidate could do just that. And a whole slate of house and senate candidates could as well. But I guess they want to vote on it in 2005.[ 10-26-2004: Message edited by: Mark T. Cenci ]

Re: York County Conservatives

"enforce orthodoxy" ???So I'm The Enforcer now?
I can assure you, we come to agreement not because we are small or can fit in a room, but because we voluntarily agree that small gov't is better than big gov't.And the majority of our members are silent on my appeals for help. So maybe they think TABOR doesn't go far enough. But I can assure you, NONE will support the Chamber plan. Can you say as much?[ 10-26-2004: Message edited by: Mark T. Cenci ]
