Unbelievable! Just another ploy to get more money to try and support the monster Augusta has created. What will this do to tourism? Tourists go to Land's End and Popham knowing they can at least drop a line in the ocean for free.
If this passes, who will enforce it? Isn't there already a shortage of wardens?
I don't like the looks of this. These sorts of fees always end up being diverted. Plus, all the frigging stripers get massacred running the gauntlet this far north anyway. I have no interest in paying more tax so that Massachusetts fisherman can kill more pigs.
AUGUSTA - Acting in response to a federal law that takes effect in 2009, the Legislature is considering a bill to require recreational fishermen to buy a saltwater license before they cast a line off the Maine coast.
"It's been a tradition all up and down the coast, not just in Maine, that you don't need a saltwater license," said Rep. Leila Percy, D-Phippsburg, who introduced the bill calling for a $15 license fee for residents and $30 for nonresidents. Residents over 70 and all children under 16 would be exempt.
It's just another screw you fee. I use to enjoy fishing and hunting. I would by a combo lic and all the stamps each year needed to hunt what I wanted to hunt. One day I came home in the morning with a couple of ducks. The wife said and I quote " 2 bucks a pound at the store how MUCH per pound for those. I thought about it and never bought another lic until my son wanted to go hunting. I don't know what the cost is today but the other day I heard something like 108 dollars for a combo lic.
The money that the state will make on this is nothing compared to the revenue the businesses in this state lose because of high taxes.
Our great state government just smells the scent of more money.
It is obvious that they do not have any idea or care how many tourists come to Maine and fish for a day or two, spend money in all of the hotels, stores and businesses along the coast.
I trust that all of the smaller government, no new tax advocates holding elected office will not support this and other attempts to raise our taxes, fees, licenses,.........

AUGUSTA - Fishing along the coast has always been free for the recreational angler.
But casting a line in salt water could cost Mainers $15 under a bill that's before the Legislature.
The idea drew both strong support and fierce opposition at a legislative hearing on Monday.
How long have we humans been fishing the Maine coast?
I was going to write this was a 400 year old tradition lost but it doesn't give this insult the credit it deserves.
Imagine a coastal legislator sponsoring this buill?

AUGUSTA (April 28): A controversial proposal to require people who want to cast their lines in saltwater to get a recreational fishing license got a mixed review at a public hearing Monday, with proponents saying they’re just trying to make the most of a federal mandate.
Opponents said Maine shouldn’t move so quickly to do away with a New England tradition of allowing noncommercial fishermen to fish in the sea without a permit.
It is an accepted fact in Augusta politics that no failed idea ever dies; it just waits for an opportunity to return. The recent resurrection of the proposal to establish a salt-water fishing license is a perfect example of an idea that was thoroughly vetted and then defeated as poor policy and now reappears with new and improved packaging and a few high profile advocates.
The Feds passed the Real ID act in 2005 and the Maine Legislature voted not to go along with it. The Feds pass a fishing licence and they act like there is nothing they can do. Hypocracy at its finest.
It is also sort of a misnomer that the Feds said we have to have a salt water fishing lic, all that has been said is that we need a saltwater registry. There must be ways to have a registry without resorting to a full on lic. My guess is that they see money on the table and want it.
AUGUSTA — With a federal requirement looming in less than two years, Maine lawmakers Monday took a first step toward a study into how a recreational fishing license system would be implemented in the state's coastal waters.
After a brief debate, the House of Representatives voted 84-50 to order the state Marine Resources Department to look into how a recreational fishing license, permit or registry would be put into effect.
According to www.wellsharbor.com the bill imposing the "license" (~$6 million/year new tax) was effectively killed by converting it into a 'study' by the committee on May 15. In June the Senate voted down even that and the House then concurred. The people who exposed the scam of the alleged Federal 'requirement' for a license and who subsequently stopped the bill deserve a lot of credit. They never should have had to go to all that work to fight another Augusta imposition.

Bump.

This is just another TAX. Nothing more.

I do agree that we should fight it.
You want a salt water fishing registry? How about this:
Boat Registration = Salt water fishing registration.
That should cover 99.9% of salt water fishing.
We don't need no stinkin' duplication.

This is great news.
Things must get worse before they get better. Might as well accelerate the process.
I wonder how many Sportsmen are paying attention? Time to p' em off.
I encourage you all to stop fighting it and start lobbying for kayak and canoe fees, and all the things Naran posted about.
Let's have a rapid increase in people PO'd by gov't.
The only way things will change.
Of course, that presumes the R's will have the stones to actually change things when people decide it is time.
Some things need to stay free.
Yeah, like, "we the people", for example.
This bill is dead, by the way, thank you very much.
And that is good news, indeed, thank you very much.
